Barbecue Kielbasa is a favorite in our family…you’ll will see it at all the summer time gatherings we have! Now, there is a long-standing competitive joke in our family regarding “who is Mom’s favorite?” Among us five siblings, whenever we do something Mom really likes you’ll hear us say “I’m Mom’s favorite!” Similarly, if we do something she doesn’t like or ‘disses’ her, you will hear one of the other siblings say “Uh oh, you’re no longer the favorite!”
In the same vein, it’s not clear who started the Barbecue Kielbasa trend in the family…Johnny or Bobby?
Johnny made it for us at my house one year. We all fell in love with it! When I mentioned this great new recipe to Bobby that he must try, he claimed he showed it to Johnny at his house one year. Hmmm…what’s a sister to do?! So, it’s become great fun to tease one or both of them when we make it. This year, Johnny was visiting and manning the grill at our Independence Day cookout…which, of course, included the Barbecue Kielbasa. I decided to capitalize on a rare opportunity to tease by big brother, so I texted Bobby (and the whole family) from Johnny’s phone, complete with a photo, saying how much he needed to try Johnny’s awesome Barbecue Kielbasa recipe! Ha Ha! That’s what a sister is to do!
This recipe is simple and oh so delicious. Oh, and here’s a funny thing I learned this year. I’ve always though we used Kielbasa (that’s what I’ve always bought) but Johnny said he gets the smoked sausage! They are so similar in flavor you can you whichever you prefer.
The sauce we like to use for Barbecue Keilbasa is Sweet Baby Rays (any variety or even a combination of varieties) with minced garlic added for additional flavor, however you can use your favorite barbecue sauce.
It is important to cut the slices of the kielbasa on a long bias so that they don’t fall through the grates of the grill. I learned that lesson the hard way, ha ha! I find the easiest way to marinate the kielbsa is with a gallon size ziplock bag.
As you grill the Barbecue Kielbasa, brush the extra sauce on them to allow for some good caramelization. These delectible bites of sausage will fly off the plates as soon as they cool down from the grilling!
You can make it on the stove top on a grill pan or even in a crock pot in the winter, however it is truly best on the grill.
